"paintings are a celebration of the moment..."

Janet was born in Guildford, Surrey but has been resident in Devon since the age of 3 and currently lives in Exeter. She gained her BA(Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Plymouth in 2000. Janet also trained in Horticulture and Plant Science holding an RHS Qualification in Horticulture and and an MSc in Plant Diversity; her love of plants and nature has a strong influence on her artistic practice.

Living in Devon, much of the inspiration for her work comes from exploring the countryside, coasts, rivers and towns nearby. Altough Janet does some times work plein air, each piece usually starts with a reference photo or sketches made on site. The painitngs are a celebration of the moment so the enjoyment of the process is a key ingredient for each piece. Drawn to objects and vistas that are calling out to be painted, boats, trees, birds and buildings are frequent motifs and provide interesting focal points.

Working mostly in acrylics, she begins with a vibrant, mid toned ground and as the layers of paint build and create the illusion of depth without obvious texture, traces of the ground remain visible unifying the painitng as a whole.

This current exhibition at Pavilions Teognmouth features works from the last three years and brings together birds and the landscapes in which they may be found.

You can find more of Janet's work on her website www.janethockley.co.uk or Instagram @Janethockleyart. She also has an Etsy shop by the same name.

A selection of Janet's work will be avilable to view in the main foyer of Pavilions Teignmouth from Monday 24th October until Friday 25th November, 2022.

All pieces will be available for sale and entry to view art is, as always, completely free.
