A new style of small monthly, ongoing sessions. In a small group with the luxury of a big, airy studio by the sea, you will have choices. Liana will ‘meet you’ at you starting point and coach you to develop. Always full of tips and ideas, she will help you warm up before demonstrating the basics in clear steps to those who need them. Improvers will be challenged with more sophisticated steps or supported to work on their own projects. Sometimes we need to hear, see and try techniques several times to ‘bed them in’. After that it’s practice that brings results!
Each session will have a subject theme with recommended techniques [eg. skies, trees, people, landscapes, flowers, limited palette etc]. Traditional or looser styles are all embraced as you take your own journey in this satisfying hobby. Many students have gone onto exhibit and even sell! All students will be invited to join Liana’s free Artist’s circle for ongoing support. Liana’s workshops are known for being warm, friendly and packed with inspirational ideas and tips.
£35 per workshop or £120 for series of 4 (+booking fee).
*you may also book am & pm if you want time to paint all day in your preferred medium.

Joy of Watercolour – Setting The Scene With Skies
Wednesday 13th May – 10.30 to 1pm
Skies are so often the backdrop to our paintings, yet are so often how we set the scene of the country, the weather, the season. Or they can be used more creatively to set a mood or also help us design a composition to showcase our focal point. Phew that’s a tall order! But if we learn and practice the skills to have smooth, loose washes, blended soft colours and believable clouds they can be the star of the show!
Clouds can be particularly fun as we use a range of domestic and DIY tools to create impressions of these fleeting features [so do look at materials list]. Come and practice lots of versions so you have a tool kit for future paintings.
Joy of Watercolour – Easy Trees & Bushes
Wednesday 10th June – 10.30 to 1pm
Most landscapes need a few trees to ‘populate’ them and whether they have a supporting role in the distance or are up front as a focal point, we need to understand their structure and silhouette, how to make them realistic and 3D …and just what do ‘bird holes’ do??!!
Each type has a different character and here certain brushes can make painting easier. Come and try the fan and the rigger brush and perhaps a few more inventive domestic and diy tools that Liana’s known for! Whatever your painting style- realistic, decorative or abstracted, tree shapes are a gift to the painter in their many forms.
Joy of Watercolour – Adding Figures For Life & Scale
Wednesday 8th July – 10.30 to 1pm
We can often fear adding small figures as badly executed ones can ruin a lovely painting. Yet figures give us detail, a sense of scale, helps us tell a story in a painting. They are often invaluable! No pressure then! We start easy, with a few tricks for simple shapes and proportions. We have lots of practice and you’ll soon be filling a page with intriguing ‘little people’ that grow in character.
Certain brushes really help us here, so do look at the materials list, and I will have a few to try. It becomes addictive and painting suggested figures may become your favourite part! This is one of our most popular workshops.
Joy of Watercolour – Understanding Colour & Colour Stories
Wednesday 5th August – 10.30am to 1pm
Colour is complex and can be confusing even to improvers, so many rules and complicated colour wheels. Yet colour is what usually draws people to our paintings and what sells, so we need to understand it. What’s more we need to glory in it and enjoy it! It’s truly one of the beauties of life!
Liana trained in colour analysis for clothes and found this more instructive than any art training, helping her see and understand the differences in colours and how they need to be used. She can walk you thru hues, tones and shades, saturation and more, demystifying the subject with her clear, unique approach with colour families. They’ll be lots of colour mixing and experiments so do bring an unlined notebook/sketch pad. Other materials can be found on the list below. Come and learn about the glories of colour!
Please note there is a booking fee per transaction. £1.00 online or by telephone, 50p at the box office.
