The Photographer
Rob North lives in Dawlish. His passion for trains began in early life and he fondly remembers the steam trains that once served the city of Exeter where he was born. When steam was abundant in Devon he was a little too young, but his interest in photographing the last 2 years of steam in the UK began when he was 13 and received his very first camera.
About the Photo Exhibition
The photographs depict steam engines on the last years of the Southern Region of British Railways, mostly at Bournemouth, Weymouth and Waterloo. There are also many pictures of the last year of steam in the North of England at Sunderland, Preston, Manchester, Bolton and Carnforth.
The Pictures
Pictures taken over 50 years ago, on a cheap camera by an inexperienced picture taker, were never going to be of the best quality. Thankfully modern editing techniques and high resolution printing have improved the original prints considerably and although they are grainy and not razor sharp, they reflect the age and the state of technology at the time. These mostly black and white images are unique and previously unpublished and capture a bygone age.
As well as the depiction of the last days of steam on Britain’s railways, there are also some pictures depicting buses and coaches in the mid 1960s, mostly in Devon. Some old tickets and pre 1948 luggage labels are also displayed.
We hope you enjoy looking at them and should you wish to purchase any, prices will be displayed with the picture and on a separate list clearly identifying the picture.
Part of the proceeds will be given to the Pavilions charity. There is also an option to purchase pictures in a different size and frame if that is preferred. Also greeting cards and single cards portraying the images are also available to purchase. The staff at the front desk will be happy to help with this.
