Workshop with Author A.C. Brokenshaw

Part of our Book Fest event

Saturday 7th November 10.30am to 11.30am

A short workshop exploring inspirational reasons why an author writes historical fiction, and what historical research is required to make stories come to life.

There will be historical literary examples from wartime short stories, one based on a tailor and one based on a suffragette milliner from Newton Abbot.

The workshop will be informative and furthermore, to assist with an interactive experience, I encourage attendees to bring something small from their life to the event. I suggest, as an example, folks bring a family photograph or a piece of jewellery, perhaps a medal, or even an old toy.  It is not like the ‘Antiques Roadshow’ where experts value the item, however we will use them to invoke creativity and inspiration for future retelling of family stories.

My new novel, which is about to be published, is based on real family events. The story, ‘Golden Billy Button’ follows a young Cornish miner who leaves Plymouth in the 1860s and eventually becomes a gold miner in Bendigo. The novel draws on family history and extensive research into Cornish mining, emigration, the voyage to Australia and nineteenth-century gold mining.  I am delighted to be bringing it back to the area where it all began.
