Palette knife paintings can be captivating as their planes create shapes and lines in 3D. Many of you would like to paint with a palette knife but find it daunting and the results sometimes messy. It just takes a little know-how and practice. Liana often says if you can butter a sandwich you can paint with a palette knife! So we’ll get our juices flowing by looking at some impressive examples of palette knife work. Then we’ll consider why every acrylics or oil painter needs a palette knife and how to choose from the bewildering array of shapes; how we can build up palette knife skills by using them in a simpler way; before a demo considering the strokes that lay down and manipulate thicker paint in the way the subject needs.
Introducing larger tools for fun, may appeal to the adventurous and more abstracted painters ...so get ready to raid the shed for trowel tools and see what’s possible with big swathes of colour!
Sounds complicated? Not really, if you can butter a sandwich! Squelching paint onto a canvas/ board is so seductive and satisfying as you produce something uniquely yours!
